Africa Rice Center
Impact Assessment has been an integral part of WARDA’s economics research program since 1990. Impact assessment activities are managed by the Impact Assessment unit which is under program 4 of the Africa Rice Centre. The goal of the impact assessment unit is to enhance income and food security in Africa through sustainable rice sector development engendered by the widespread adoption of rice technologies, improved farming practices, favorable policies, effective institutions and programs. The purpose is to generate evidence-based knowledge and information that supports the development of demand-driven rice technologies, policies and institutions to improve livelihoods, nutrition and economic development. The program aims at developing impact assessment tools and methods and at enhancing capacity for impact assessment, policy analysis and priority setting among partner institutions such as the NARS. The unit is also responsible for the implementation of adoption studies, ex- ante and ex-post impact assessment studies on a wide range of themes including assessments on the impact of trade liberalization on rural livelihoods.

Bioversity International
Bioversity International's work has had considerable impact on the conservation and use of plant genetic resources worldwide. Bioversity International has sponsored over 550 germplasm collecting missions in 136 countries. Many national genebanks have been established with the Institute's assistance, and more than 2000 national scientists have been trained. Over 150 countries now participate in the 50 or so networks whose development has been supported by IPGRI. Through its research, Bioversity International has contributed to a better understanding of genetic diversity and to major advances in conservation strategies and methods, especially in such areas as in vitro conservation and ultra-dry seed storage.

Center for International Maize and Wheat Improvement - CIMMYT
Impacts Targeting and Assessment: To increase the impact of the global maize and wheat innovation network formed by CIMMYT and its partners, new methods are needed to build capacity, strengthen policy research, and develop center and system-wide decision tools. This requires research with a global focus to understand changes affecting the economic, political, and institutional environments in which CIMMYT operates; to identify cross-cutting issues that transcend national and regional boundaries; to ensure that resources are being used efficiently and effectively; to identify key entry points for policy interventions; and to ensure the consistency and coherency of CIMMYT's policies and statements on issues of importance to the Center and its partners.

Impact Assessment - To satisfy the growing demands on their institutions, planners must ensure that scarce resources are being used as efficiently as possible. For this purpose they need reliable information about the impact of research.

International Crop Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics - ICRISAT
Impact Highlights: ICRISAT's newly established Impact Assessment Office (IAO) builds on past efforts. The new research strategy gives greater priority to impact-oriented research in the research portfolio. Under this structure, the IAO is the focal point for all impact assessment research. The IAO will conduct research on specific issues to address the broad agenda for impact analysis and better understand impact; develop improved analytical methods for assessment of impacts; strengthen institutional capacity for impact analysis within ICRISAT and among partner NARS; and provide technical backstopping for adoption and impact assessment research in global research themes. The accomplishments so far are the following.

International Food Policy Research Institute - IFPRI
To more systematically measure our impact, IFPRI launched a coordinated impact assessment effort in 1996. The objectives of IFPRI's impact assessment activities are to: ensure accountability of IFPRI to its clients maintain credibility with clients improve IFPRI's internal decisionmaking process and our capacity to learn from past experiences ensure that IFPRI's work continues to remain relevant and useful in a rapidly changing world To meet these objectives, IFPRI developed five priority areas for its impact assessment research: to expand the information available on how to measure the benefits of policy-oriented social science research to qualitatively determine how policymakers and others use policy-focused research results to assess how IFPRI's research in thematic areas, such as rural finance for the poor, influences the countries where the research is conducted and beyond into the international arena to study the impacts of specific research projects at the country level to conduct an integrated assessment of IFPRI's past research in numerous areas .
