Kenyan Agricultural Research Institute - KARI
Socio-Economics and Biometrics Research Programme The development, adaptation and adoption of appropriate agricultural technologies are influenced by both biophysical and socio-economic circumstances of the farmers and other stakeholders. Biophysical circumstances include factors such as plant and animal genetic resources, climate, soils, water, pests and diseases. Socio-economic circumstances include factors such as output/input prices, domestic and external input-output markets, profitability of interventions, existing policies of facilitating institutions and socio-cultural issues. Both technical and socio-economic aspects of the technology need to be considered in technology development to enhance the likelihood of adoption. As resources for agricultural production become scarce, the case for consideration of both social and economic aspects becomes stronger. Consequently, KARI runs a socio-economics and biometrics research programme to provide appropriate socio-economic and biometrics input to different programmes.
